What is Beijng Opera?
Beijing opera is a form of traditional Chinese theatre which combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance and acrobatics. It arose in the late 18th century and became fully developed and recognized by the mid-19th century. The form was extremely popular in the Qing Dynasty court and has come to be regarded as one of the cultural treasures of China.
Mei Lanfang was one of the most famous Beijing Opera artists in modern history, exclusively known for his qingyi roles, a type of dan role. Any introduction to Peking Opera would be incomplete without mentioning female impersonator, Mei Lanfang. Traditionally only men performed in Peking Opera, including the female roles. And Mei Lanfang was the very best master of the miss. During his stage life, he embellished the traditions of the past with his own creations, shaping a style of his own.
Every color in the facial patterns, no matter whether it is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, or purple, lends itself effectively to the expression of a definite trait in the character’s personality.
The purple color Beijing opera mask symbolizes loyalty, candor and uprightness.
The red color mask, when used as the chief color, symbolizes loyalty, faithfulness, and courage.
The black color mask symbolizes firmness and honesty, or temerity.
The blue color Beijing opera mask symbolizes valor, stubbornness and intractability
A yellow face Beijing opera mask symbolizes brutality and insidiousness characteristic of such people as brigand chiefs.
A green face mask symbolizes bravery, brutality and despotism, and vehemence and irascibility.
A white color mask has several implications. It may simply signify an old, white-haired hero or army officer without reference to their personality.
Save Beijing Opera
Beijing opera is a national treasure of China with a history of 200 years. I love Beijing opera so much, but now Beijing opera faces a big problems. 2010 is an unusual year for Beijing opera.On November 16, the Chinese Beijing Opera in "human intangible cultural heritage representative work list". On January 20, 2011 the last 50 days, in recent years, the biggest of the national Peking Opera performance ending excellent dramas. From traditional art to the world heritage, the history of the Peking Opera to turn a new page. How to let the Peking Opera culture in creative time and continued inheritance, is we have to consider the problems of today. Now days, different countries' culture came to China, young people will choose pop music rather than opera. Less and less chinese like Beijing opera. Learning the culture from other country is not a bad thing, but we shouldn't lose our own culture. Beijing Opera is not only a kind of performance art, but also a cultural heritage.
